I have looked at this throw several times and I believe that it could be classed as a reasonable (and successful) attempt at Yoko Gake.

I also must ask why the corner judges are giving score signals before the Referee, infact they should only give a signal if they DISAGREE with the score.

The Referee does not have to hold his hand in the Osae Komi signal for the full 20 seconds of the hold down.

Trust you to notice that eh?

Anyone would think that you know about refereeing, would you explain why?

The Center Ref is controlling the fight, the corner Judges are there to ASSIST, if the 2 corner judges disagree with the Ref then they should signify in the manner described according to the rules AFTER the call has been made, but they DO NOT indicate a score BEFORE the Referee in the middle.
He must make the call and THEN look towards a corner for confirmation or denial of his call.

I must admit, this event was my first stint at being a referee, I fortunatley was not in that video, what you say makes perfect sense, (for once)

The big guy without the suit and tie is Kevin (shinto) and it was also a first for him, so we were picking up advice and tips from the knowledgeable ones, as this forum is a good way to educate on all aspects of Judo, the more information you give the better, maybe you can open a thread on refereeing and demontrate where the mistakes are etc

Hi Paul,

By no means do I question your understanding of the throw.

Would you be kind enough to tell me the difference between this Kosoto gake and a yoko Otoshi or Yoko Gake,

I'm going to answer your question with a question. Is yoko gake a yoko sutemi waza? Is kosoto gake a yoko sutemi waza? Do you think tori initiated the throw thinking he was going to do a sutemi waza?

Mmm, that will teach me wont it eh!!

Q. Do I think he was going for sutemi waza?

A. No, I think Mitchell would agree that he was going for it at all, it just kind of worked well, and his hand and body rotation pulled Uke into an Ippon,

At first I had this throw as more of a yoko otsohi due to Ukes landing, I have looked at the video again and again, and can understand why its a ko soto gake, his leg does actually hook to the rear of Uke first, and doesnt slide down to his side etc,

I think one of the biggest problems are with interpretations of many of the images of techniques,

kosoto gake
